Schönbrunn's Orangery
Standing on tiptoe, looking over the fence
at the roof of the orangery and the swelling clouds beyond,
lit by the late afternoon sun of a beautiful midsummer day

"As far back as the time of the dowager empress Wilhelmine Amalie an orangery garden was established at Schönbrunn which included a hothouse for overwintering the tender citrus trees. In 1754 Franz I Stephan instigated the building of the Orangery by Nicola Pacassi, probably to designs by Nicolas Jadot. One hundred and eighty-nine metres long and ten metres wide, the Schönbrunn Orangery is one of the two largest Baroque orangeries in the world the other being at Versailles"

Thanks for making that extra stretch over the fence. :)

ReplyDeleteGreat exposure Merisi, Was the place closed or is it not open to the public?
ReplyDeleteJim, the orangery and its garden are but a small part of Schönbrunn. The gardens were open to the public until recently. Now they are closed off, unless you buy a ticket. :-(
DeleteI love the concept of the orangery, very beautiful too. I once upon a time had tea in the Orangery at Kensington Palace in London. Oh the light can be so wonderful in an orangery.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, orangeries are magical places. In the emperor's former private garden, the Burggarten, there is also a conservatory, with a café and restaurant.
Deletevery lovely sky ..i call those mashed potato clouds
