"March 1 began the numbered year in Russia until the end of the 15th century. Great Britain and its colonies continued to use March 25 until 1752, when they finally adopted the Gregorian calendar. Many other cultures and religions still celebrate the beginning of the New Year in March."

Veh's mir, how does that Shtreimel stay perched on his head?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Wikipedia, "the shtreimel is always worn over a kippah, or yarmulke" - I imagine they are somehow fastened together.
DeleteWho are the funny looking guys?
ReplyDeleteThese are Shtreimels, Stefan:
DeleteWikipedia: A shtreimel (Yiddish: שטרײַמל, pl. שטרײַמלעך shtreimlech) is a fur hat worn by many married haredi Jewish men, particularly (although not exclusively) members of Hasidic groups, on Shabbat and Jewish holidays and other festive occasions.[1] In Jerusalem, the shtreimel is also worn by "Yerushalmi" Jews (non-Hasidim who belong to the original Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem, also known as Perushim). The shtreimel is generally worn only after marriage, except in some Yerushalmi communities, where boys wear it from the age of bar mitzvah."
Wonderful captures as always and like the others, I wonder what's on those guys heads???? Hope you have a great new week, Merisi!!
ReplyDeleteSylvia,

It looks quite pleasant to be out and about, Merisi.

ReplyDeleteThank you! :-)
DeleteThe first one is among my favourite spots. Then again, there are too many special places around here.
I can't begin to tell you how delightful this looks. I would love it there! What a wonderful city.
ReplyDeleteHope you may be able to visit soon! :-)
DeleteWonderful shots! Reminds me that I have to visit the Karmelitermarkt in the next time...
ReplyDeleteIt's such a lovely place, especially on Saturdays with the farmers market.
DeleteBeautiful sequence, Merisi!
ReplyDeleteMille grazie, Pietro! :-)
DeleteIt may be closing time at the Karmeliter Market, but barefoot in Vienna?
ReplyDeleteWell spotted!
DeleteI was wondering whether anyone would notice.
My theory is that she was wearing those red high heels all morning. Once the market closed down, she bathed her sore feet in the little tub, and just as she was getting comfortable, duty called again. ;-)
A beautiful afternoon light makes these photos very nice.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree! Thank you! :-)
