Vanilla Crescents
My family's favorite
Austrian Christmas cookies
Baking as the sun is setting
on the shortest day of the year
A sheet of Vanillakipferl,
dusted with powdered sugar,
in the golden evening glow,
and outside,
a painted winter sky -
the angels baking cookies,
as my mother used to say

Hi Merisi, I absolutely love that photograph of the winter sky and silhouette trees. You are a true artist. I wish you a wonderful Christmas filled with angel baked cookies and hope to meet up with you again in some enchanting coffee shop in 2015, if only in the virtual world. x
ReplyDeleteThank you, Valerie, merry Christmas to you and yours, too!
DeleteWho knows, there may be an enchanting coffee shop somewhere in the real world.
I love the atmosphere in your images. What a gorgeous sight when baking.

Thank you, and yes, the view is enchanting, always. ;-)
DeleteThe last photo is noteworthy anywhere.
ReplyDeleteTomás.
Thank you, Tomás!

Yes, it is! And baking my own meager selection of cookies makes me realize what a wonder woman my mother was! She baked the most complicated cookies, and in great quantities. After all, she had to feed a family of ten! ;-)
DeleteI wish I could eat one of those crescents right now.
ReplyDeleteI have to be really hold myself back, to not go and steal one myself!
Delete(We were allowed to only eat broken or burnt ones, when we were children. Imagine, standing watch around the kitchen, hoping something bad would happen to the one or other cookie! The first "good" cookies were served on Christmas Eve, never earlier.
With a bit of coffee of course.
ReplyDeleteThey go very well also with Early Grey tea with milk! ;-)
DeleteThey look tasty!
ReplyDeleteThey are, they are! Barely any sugar in the pastry dough, the dusting of powdered vanilla sugar adds just the right amount of sweetness, bringing the almond taste to the fore.
DeleteThe best Christmas cookie! We call them vanilias kifli..........Peace and joy be with you!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that name, Kristi! How did those cookies become part of your Christmasses?
DeleteMay all that's good be with you!
Love the imagery (and the image) of "the Angels baking cookies".
ReplyDeleteEvery day, at Christmastime, when i see the sun set in hues of gold and magenta, I hear my mother's voice, "The angels are baking, again!" - when I was little I believed her, I even saw little angel children with wings scurrying about in the celestial kitchen.
DeleteA lovely image, those baking angels. I'll remember that.
DeleteSo many of the senses involved here!
ReplyDeleteif i hadn't eaten so much yesterday i might be licking the computer screen to get some of those
ReplyDeleteOh, so beautiful! And I may have to make those cookies soon.
ReplyDeleteLOVE YOUR MAMA"S SAYING!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMERRY CHRISTMAS............XX
Ummmm, those Crescent Cookies look so yummy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos Merisi,
I just can't seem to get my motor going this morning.
So much to do and here I sit!
Suffered from the same condition this morning, Sue! :-)
DeleteBeautiful skies, and beautiful cookies! I'm going to remember your mother's saying--so sweet.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful skies, but now I think I need to bake some more cookies. :-)
ReplyDeleteDelicious and lovely!
