Buying a Christmas Tree in Vienna
The Short of it. Somewhat

How to buy
a Christmas tree in Vienna

* Wait for the 15th of December
when the Christmas tree lots open
* Stop at "your" farmer's lot
on your way home from work -
rest assured, there is one between
your tram stop and your home
!
* A warm hello to the "Lord of the Trees"
and a gentle reminder that none
of the trees on the lot are to your liking
* Describe in glowing detail that
gorgeous tree you bought from him
last Christmas
* Allow your farmer an offer
to go visit his Christmas tree woods
right that same evening and
cut that one tree he knows will please you!
* Make arrangements for the tree
to be delivered and set up
in your living room the next evening
* Start decorating the tree -
I have not asked, but quite possibly
somewhere in Vienna an elf
is waiting to be hired to take
this chore too off your hands
!
Ah, Vienna,
packing your kids in the car
and driving to the Christmas tree lot
and then wrestling that monster onto
the roof of the car and driving home
and the whole mess of setting the tree up -
all but a distant memory!

Are you ready for coffee?
Tea or chocolate?
Off to the Kaffeehaus!
Ah, Vienna.

    1. Charles,
traditionally, Austrians buy the Christmas tree as close as possible to the holidays. They put the Christmas tree up on the 24th, Christmas Eve, and leave it up during the 12 days of Christmas, through Three-Kings-Day, the 6th of January.

  3. Trees always look so lovely to me dusted in snow.

  4. Merisi, I think that I might just prefer the Vienna tree arrival date to this year's NYC sidewalk trees (mostly from Canada) that appeared in late November.

I am very happy to have the fragrance of these sidewalk vendors' trees accompany my errand walks, but somehow, somehow, I do wish that they could have waited until December to stake their ground.

My tiny apartment won't easily accommodate an actual tree, even a small one. Today, I did bring some red berried branches into my home to find their place along with some paperwhites just about to bloom, and white cyclamen still blooming, and some Christmas cactus plants on my windowsill. Those cactus plants survive, but cannot bring themselves to bloom.

  5. Wonderful! Unfortunately I have no tree this year, but I'm spending the holiday away from home so I'm not too bothered by it.

  8. Looks fantastic! (Less than 30% chance for a white Christmas here in Stavanger.) Enjoy the season! I would have gone for hot chocolate if I had been in Vienna on a day like this.
