As of yesterday, the first of March,

-> About Schanigarten at Wikipedia:
Schanigarten is the Austro-Bavarian term for tables and chairs set up on the sidewalk in front of eating and drinking places. Unlike normal beer gardens (Gastgärten), the customers actually sit on public property.
As far as I understand, outdoor gardens of cafes and restaurants on privately owned land can be kept open (or not) year round. There are also market areas and the like that have outdoor tables through all the seasons.
ReplyDeleteThe Schanigarten season refers only to sidewalk cafes on public property. Some of them also take up parking spaces on streets. There's always concern and debate about various aspects of the private use of public space.
Wonderful - I wholeheartedly approve of this, and it's a new word for my vocabulary :)

Thank you!
DeleteAnd yes, lovely cafe and square!
Happy Schanigarten season!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :-)
DeleteHow very exciting! Still snowy here!
ReplyDeleteox
L has already seen cherry blossoms in her neighborhood!
DeleteI hope winter moves away from the East Coast and up to the North Pole soon, Elisabeth.
We won't see the tables and chairs out on terraces for at least five more weeks. If not longer, given that there's no hint of spring anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteViennese are rather hardy, weatherwise. They even eat and drink outside in freezing conditions. ;-)
DeleteWhat a great way to announce that spring is here!
ReplyDeleteAs the saying goes, when tables and chair begin to show up outside, spring MUST be here any moment. ;-)
DeleteIt is so nice to see the first signs of spring, even if they are very far from home! We're still covered in snow :(
ReplyDeleteI read the weather reports up and down the East Coast and empathize with your plight!
DeleteMay spring win over winter soon, everywhere.
