Blizzard and Whiteouts
Vienna in Winter

It was during the worst blizzard since I had moved to Vienna,
but after several housebound days, I needed to get out, no matter
how much snow was falling and how hard the wind was howling.
I took the 7 minutes U1 metro ride from St. Stephen's Cathedral
to the "Alte Donau" stop in Kaisermühlen, in the 22nd District.
I walked along the Danube river, past the Reichsbrücke bridge,
along Donaupark, from where I crossed another bridge,
finally arriving at the Millenium Tower.
From there, I rode the U6 metro back to the city center.

I had walked about 4 miles, for more than two hours.
A few times I got lost, once almost stepping onto
the ice at the river's edge - surface visibility was at times so bad,
whiteout conditions really, it was hard to discern whether I was still on land.
After I boarded the metro, I literally began to defrost,
the snow and ice that had accumlated on my clothing slowly melting.
A memorable walk, and I am glad I got back home safely.
My camera braved the subzero weather in exemplary manner. ;-)

  5. Hi M., long time since my last visit. Beautiful winter landscapes, like master paintings. The weather was similar (but with less snow) during our only visit to Vienna in Dec. of 1989... my, that was a while ago. but the memories of grandness are still with me.

  6. Wow, almost zero visibility with all that white snow. Great shots, and the first photo is my favorite in this set.
