Fieldfares at St. Marx Cemetery
Vienna in Winter

Fieldfares at St. Marx Cemetery
Fieldfares spend summers up north,
in Scandinavia, Russia, the Baltic countries,
breeding in Lapland and the Arctic tundra.

A large flock of these beautiful birds
finds a winter haven at St. Marx cemetery,
year after year. This morning, there were many more birds
than you can see here. They moved so fast, though,
and settled in more than one tree, I was not able
to capture them all at once

While I was walking up the hill,
wading through knee-high snow,
the fieldfares moved on too.
They were now sitting high in a tree,
next to Mozart's final resting place

Photographed this morning,
on a grey, cold January day,
at St. Marx Cemetery
3rd District

  1. Beautiful birds and great captures as always, Merisi, and it does look COLD!! Beautiful, but cold! It's certainly not that cold here in Seattle, but it is chill and foggy -- can barely see across the street! So, it's going to be a gray weekend! Hope you have a great one! Stay warm!

    1. Sylvia,
the cold was not too bad, at least not as long as my clothes stayed dry.
At the end, I was quite relieved to be back home and warm up and dry my soaked clothes. ;-)
Stay safe, a beautiful weekend to you, too,
      Merisi

  2. I have never heard the name of those birds before.
I love how they "decorate" the barren trees.
Stay warm and dry, but thank you for braving the cold to take the fabulous photos.

    1. Sue,
if you follow the "Arctic Birds" link below, you'll find close-ups of fieldfares, very pretty birds. A smaller flock likes to dine in the courtyard garden here. They pick the red berries of a yew tree.

  4. What pretty birds! Perfect ornaments for the lacy tracery of bare branches. You are a hardy woman to brave the cold and snow -- thank you!

  6. Oh, I just love that first picture so much. Those birds just look so light -- without weight, I mean. That's really gorgeous, Merisi.

  7. Birds as tree ornaments - very pretty! I have not heard of these birds before. They seem to like cold weather.

  10. Dear Merisi,
You take such charming photos of winter in Vienna that you could make me think of the season a bit more kindly! I'm mostly just hibernating and waiting to see little green buds on trees and spot the first patches of green on my postage stamp-sized lawn!

Thank you SO much for your note this morning on The Tearoom! I've been an especially bad citizen of the Blog World lately! But your note this morning is a treat and the way things are shaping up, the Random Number Generator may be choosing "1" as the winner! :-)

    Hugs,
    Betty

  12. I came to your blog via Gina's. I am so pleased that I clicked on the photos and saw those wonderful Wax Wings also on the tree with the Fieldfares. Very chilly here in the Cotswolds too.

  13. There's a big old blue jay sitting on a limb outside my window as I type this. and a huge number of other birds at our feeders, which we've been able to fill again after several days of rain
