Sunday Morning in the City
The Emperor's Greenhouse and Gardens

Butterfly behind Glass
Poor fellow,
what must he think

looking out at the sunny
interior of the emperor's greenhouse

where everyone but him
is free to come and go

or sit outside
in the sunshine?

Photographed Sunday morning at the emperor's greenhouse, built in the early 1900s by Jugenstil architect Friedrich Ohman. It is now home to a tropical butterfly house* and the Palmenhaus Café*

Viennese Moments

Some mornings hit you at full speed
at the break of dawn when the birds start singing
and the time to play is for one image only.
You are invited, though, to linger longer:
just hit one of the labels below and then wander
amongst the images of days gone by, and if you want,
you can continue clicking the labels in perpetuity.
Enjoy meandering,
and a wonderful day to all of you, and
thank you for yesterday's comments,
they were all the sugar I needed in my coffee this morning,

Speak softly
Spring carries a light Touch

Blumenstockgasse
One of the first addresses I went in search of
when I moved to Vienna was this quaint, narrow lane.
I knew about the place from Thomas Bernhard
mentioning it in "Wittgenstein's Nephew"
:
... my relations with Paul, which began at
our friend Irena's apartment in Blumenstockgasse
...

Ballgasse
A few more steps and we'd be back
at Blumenstockgasse

Daffodils and Willow Catkins
Stephensplatz and Churhausgasse

Schmierfinken
Fink - finch
schmieren - deface
The urge to deface public spaces
seems to know no reason or cure -
I rather pity the poor innocent finch!

The Cherry Orchard
Spring in Vienna

"... everywhere I have been,
every minute, day and night,

my soul has been full
of mysterious anticipations.
I can hear the sound of its footsteps....

I feel the approach of happiness, Anya;
I see it coming ...

it is coming towards us,
nearer and nearer;

And if we do not see it,
if we do not know it,
what does it matter?
Others will see it."

could well be the most artistic one in town

Street Photography
I have been told that it's a sign of frustration
when street photographers start shooting bikes -
oh well! I was trying to frame the métallisé pink bike
in front of Tiffany's boutique, when this girl
in her pink tights walked by ;-)

Seraphic Spring

Before you thought of Spring
Except as a Surmise
You see
- God bless his suddenness -
A Fellow in the Skies
Of independent Hues
A little weather worn
Inspiriting habiliments
Of Indigo and Brown —
With specimens of Song
As if for you to choose —
Discretion in the interval
With gay delays he goes
To some superior Tree
Without a single Leaf
And shouts for joy to Nobody
But his seraphic self -

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Vienna!
As green as can be

As green as can be
I thought when I spotted
this beautifully costumed couple
in front of the Doge's Palace in Venice
during this year's Carnevale celebrations

May it be a beautiful St. Patrick's
for all of you!

Tulip Madness
Vienna in Spring

A little Madness in the Spring
Is wholesome even for the King,

But God be with the Clown --
Who ponders this tremendous scene --

This whole Experiment of Green --
As if it were his own!
