Coffee Melange
Just another Saturday
morning in Vienna
with a good book,
a second cup of coffee, and the
Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister
marching by, playing a tune
right out of history books,
the very moment I open
the first chapter - "Vienna, 1913-1914" -
of William Boyd's novel "Waiting for Sunrise"

-> History of the Hoch- und Deutschmeister:
"In 1696 Franz-Ludwig, Count Palatine of the Rhein, Duke of Neuberg, authorized the "Hoch- und Teutschmeister" regiment .... This is considered to be the formal birth of the Hoch- und Deutschmeister line, possibly the proudest name in Imperial Austria's military history."

Which event was going on? The tourists must have loved to see this Sisi-like orchestra.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea, they just happened to march by while I was having coffee.
DeleteAccording to their website, something at the Imperial Palace.
Love the uniform!
ReplyDeleteLook up their site, they throw in an appearance every now and then, apparently. ;-)
DeleteThanks for the book suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI have bought myself a Kindle, and always look for new books.
You are welcome!
DeleteI am mostly looking for time to read. ;-)
Serendipitous moment! I do hope you enjoy it, and thanks for the link!
ReplyDeleteSerendipity, that's the word! ;-)
DeleteI want your beautiful life ;).
ReplyDelete*smile*
DeleteStage master is my last name. ;-)
Merisi, I like your reading environment (several meanings there, perhaps.) I continue to have most of my moments with Waiting for Sunrise during my daily underground subway commute to and from work. Boyd's writing allows me to transcend the immediate drudge, and take me far away. I do not mind when my train's arrival is delayed...more time to read.
ReplyDeleteI am almost halfway through the novel and the plot begins to thicken.
xo
Frances,
DeleteI was looking forward all week to that morning! I skipped my early Saturday foray to the farmers market and had a "Viennese Coffee House Moment" instead. ;-)
I also have subway moments with the book.
I want to go Vienna Café hopping with you!
ReplyDeleteMe too! :-)))
DeleteA sweet morning to you Merisi~ A charming set of images shared...soon it shall be time for my journey to Starbucks, and I shall remember these images when I am stuck with a simple iced coffee;')~
ReplyDeleteI am sure Starbucks can provide a nice morning coffee time!
DeleteIt's as if my dad were still alive. That Deutschmeister guy looks just like him.
ReplyDeleteOh, that is interesting! He looked a bit concerned, with me crouching there until he almost had to step aside. ;-)
DeleteCoffee and a good book sound delightful!
ReplyDeleteIt is, indeed! :-)
DeleteDelicious looking..
ReplyDeletemakes me want to take up coffee
If only I'd earn a penny for making people switch to coffee and come to Vienna! :-)
DeleteWhat a nice way to enjoy a morning!
ReplyDeleteAlmost as good as sitting on your porch and watch the sun rise over the mountains!
DeleteWell, that was a bit pretentious. Your view beats mine every time!
DeleteI love the current look of your blog. Are the photos bigger?
ReplyDeleteSuch a treat to visit as always!
Thank you, Elizabeth!
DeleteSo glad you noticed that I did a bit of behind the scenes work on my blog (I am not particularly patient with learning new tricks, but for once I at least took the time to try). I have not figured out how to actually make the size of the images larger as a whole, but clicking on them gives you a slide show with the actual size.
What a nice morning you had with a good book, a nice cup of coffee at a pleasant place!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the conductor.
