Oh the Choices!
Food along a Viennese City Block or two

SKAEN
Scandinavian Deli
Margaretenstrasse
5th District

S'Powidl *
Austrian and Bohemian Cuisine
Margaretenstrasse
5th District

Point of Sale
I hear of expatriats' pilgrimages,
having breakfast with baked beans there -
no word, though, if they offer a "Full English"
Schleifmühlgasse
4th District

The Breakfast Club
Tiny place, great breakfast menu,
all day long, Asian style being my favorite.
Schleifmühlgasse
4th District

Gentlemen's Club
Table and chairs seem to belong
to the cigar store -
I see it as proof that the Viennese
will take any opportunity to catch
the breeze - note the Manic Botanic store
next door, you can shop and then drop
on one of their outdoor chairs!

*) "Powidl" is a plum butter,
made with fruit only, its sweetness
derives from long hours of slow cooking
very ripe plums.

Altösterreich:
"Austrian" does not really translate
the meaning of "AltÖsterreich" which refers
to the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary during
the years 1867 - 1918, also called
Cisleithania
(click on the word to find out more
at Wikipedia).

All these places
are within easy walking distance
of each other - I took the pictures
while I had gotten lost looking
for "Babette's"

That "vespa" seems to follow you ...
I'll have my breakfast at a table outside a typical Austrian place.
What does an Austrian breakfast look like ???

  2. Such delicious choices! But baked beans? Ugh - surely England's least delightful culinary tradition. On the other hand, Babette's chocolate quince tartelette has me practically swooning :)

  9. Thank you all! :-)

    Marie-Noëlle & Vicki,
    a typical Viennese breakfast?
I shall post about it in the not too far future!

    Dorte,
yes, I found it! Again. ;-)
I had gotten off U4 at Kettenbrückengasse, not realizing Schleifmühlgasse is quite a walk from there. These small mishaps are a reminder that I am not a native! ;-)

    The New Diplomat's Wife,
    Wipplinger will follow a.s.a.p.! :-)
Went to Novelli's last night. One of those wonderbare Viennese evenings with summery air and a mild mild breeze.
