"I have had a dream
past
the wit of man
to say
what dream it was."
No, this encounter
did not take place
in the realm of Fairyland,
but in Schönbrunn Park
in the shade of
a linden tree lined path
The gentlemen were there -
in period uniforms -
to help celebrate the opening
of an exhibition to commemorate
the bicentennial of the wedding of
the French Emperor Napoleon
to Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria

The quote "I have had a dream"
is of course Bottom's from
Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream"

Oh, these are super shots! My fave is the 5th one down! Thanks for the smiles. I would love to see the exhibit!
ReplyDeleteThey're still commemorating THAT wedding? It was a while ago wasn't it? :)
ReplyDeleteThose uniforms are something else--love the "sunflowers" on the hats of the two older gents.
ReplyDeleteHow gallant!
ReplyDeleteThe allure of men in uniform always makes me dream :).
ReplyDeleteIt is so clever the way you crop your photographs. You have given the figures a fairy tale look.
ReplyDeletewillow,
ReplyDeletethose gentlemen were waiting for a signal to move but were kept waiting. And waiting.
Charles Gramlich,
well, after two decades of war - thanks to the bridegroom! - that wedding was finally a flicker of hope that the bloodshed would end, reason enough to remember the event every hundred years or so, I guess. ;-)
ds,
would be interesting to know about the significance of those sunflowers, wouldn't it?
LOL! You have captured a great piece of military history there, Merisi!
ReplyDeleteSK WALLER,
ReplyDeleteyes, indeed!
SHE WRITES,
well, these particular ones were an interesting lot! ;-)
ACORNMOON,
I did not expect to encounter anybody out there while walking through the park and had only the 85mm lens with me, which demands some creative framing.
I hardly ever crop pictures, it is either they work as I framed them originally or they are losses. I did crop the last one, though. There was simply no way to get this close to the gentleman. ;-)
WANDERING STAR,
ReplyDeletethank you! This is Vienna, one never knows who will cross your path next. ;-)
I adore these, love the little man in blue riding pants, too cute a chap, and those horses, they have always been a big part in my life, living in horse country USA~
ReplyDeletePoor Josephine...I can only imagine how she felt about this wedding...
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific post, Merisi. There is something very musical about it. Couldn't stop looking at the first photo...he's almost falling out of the picture. And the faces of the gentlemen in blue are priceless.
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying your summer.
Catherine xx
In the second photo, the grey horse closest to the viewer/you shows the 'Favory' line of the Lippizaner horse. Marvelous photos, Meriai.
