The Winged Lion of San Marco
greets another dawn
from high over the Piazzetta
next to San Marco Square.
Andrea Palladio's church of
San Giorgio Maggiore
emerges from the predawn mist
across the Canale di San Marco
Wooden Benches
leaning languorously
against the columns of the arcades
next to Caffè Florian,
in wait for when the late morning's sun
rises them from their dreamy mood,
to stand ready to offer once again refuge
to patrons waiting for a table
at La Serenessima's
most venerable coffee house
A Few Pigeons
take a leisurely morning stroll,
playfully picking over what's left
from last night's bounty.
I can almost feel how they relish
the thought that soon enough
they will again be blessed with
Manna from Heaven,
albeit at the hands of man
The Curtain's Up,
the stage is set:
The sun will rise
and so will La Serenissima

Morning is such a lovely time, but I seldom seem to have time to enjoy it. I must change that.
ReplyDeleteSo lovely and quiet! I have a little winged Lion of St. Marco on the shelf to remind me of that lovely city...
ReplyDeleteEnchanting, that's Venezia. Perfect atmosphere, perfect tones, delightful ambience. Wonderful post
ReplyDeleteCiao
E xx
I'm sitting down to write those beautiful wooden benches a love note :)
ReplyDeleteCan't get enough of those wonderful awnings in San Marco! The play of light in your photos is so Venetian....lovely.
ReplyDeleteYou make me long to go back to Venice! Brava!
ReplyDeleteA winged lion and Benches with ornate turned legs make a lovely contrast to scenes here where most man made things are rough around the edges and new.Thank you for the visit to Venice ...great fun and makes me appreciate the views here too!
ReplyDeleteThe ice sculptures are still standing downtown and the Dog sled race will have a winner today...
Charles Gramlich,
ReplyDeletemornings are magical anywhere!
Vicki Lane,
what time of the year did you visit Venice last?
Juju,
would you believe me when I tell you that I did not remember those benches from my previous visits? Do early mornings sharpen perception?
Eleonora,
ReplyDeletethe early morning hour forces one to look for other than the usual pictures, at least that's what it feels like, until you discover all you did again was capture what La Serenissima looks at her finest.
Theresa Cheek,
those creamy awnings must be amongst those photographed most in the whole wide world! ;-)
Ilva,
ReplyDeleteVenice is such an enchantress, isn't she?
Maybe we shall meet there one day! ;-)
Val,
just yesterday was I reflecting upon what it is that our generation will leave future ones to enjoy. I am very pessimistic about that.
OH pinks and golds along with the lovely flow of each image presented in this series, the tones give off an alluring and captive presence~
ReplyDeleteSplendide foto, Merisi. You capture the soft morning light beautifully and with it one of the many facets of the most beautiful city in the world.
ReplyDeletethe curtain is lovely Merisi! It looks quiet in the photos. Not for long in Venice (I remember how busy it is in the summer):)

ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful images. Someday I will get to Venice. Someday...
ReplyDeleteYou do travel around! Florian is just wonderful... one of the few true rivals to the Viennese café.
ReplyDeleteLove the early morning! I really like the photo of those benches too.
