Merry Christmas From Vienna

Red Christmas Rose
Found this morning
at Heiligenkreuzerhof
First District
Vienna

*

Lo, how a rose e'er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming,
As men of old have sung.
It came, a flow'ret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When half-spent was the night.

Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The rose I have in mind,
With Mary we behold it.
The Virgin mother kind.
To show God's love aright
She bore to them a Savior,
When half-spent was the night.

Music: Cologne, 1599
English (1894): Theodore Baker

Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
Aus einer Wurzel zart.
Wie uns die Alten sungen,
Aus Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht,
Mitten im kalten Winter,
Wohl zu der halben Nacht.

Das Röslein das ich meine,
Davon Jesaias sagt:
Maria ist's, die Reine,
Die uns das Blümlein bracht:
Aus Gottes ewigem Rat
Hat sie ein Kindlein g'boren
Bleibend ein reine Magd.

I was thinking of this beautiful old Christmas song when I spotted the rose today at noon. It felt quite special, this rose has weathered snow and ice.

    Happy Holidays!

  21. Oh, how I've missed my daily visit to your lovely city! But now that our power (out since last Friday) is restored, I'm enjoying all your lovely images from the past week. The Queen of the Night is a favorite of mine.

Happiest of holidays, Merisi! And many, many thanks for providing the impetus it took for me to 'move up' to the Nikon SLR! I never pick up that camera without thinking how much I like it -- and all thanks to you!
