Sky Watch: Angels over Vienna

Kirche am Steinhof
The late morning sun
reflected in the stained-glass window
designed by Kolo Moser
Front façade of architect Otto Wagner's
Church of St. Leopold

Viennese Jugendstil
Built in the years 1905-1907,
to serve the Psychiatric Hospital of
Baumgartenberg
14th District

Gilded Bronze Angels
By Othmar Schimkowitz
(1864 - 1947)
Schimkowitz was a Hungarian-born sculptor
and a noted member of the Viennese Secession.

View from the Front Portico
The view from the portico,
located under Schimkowitz's angels,
is somewhat restricted by the towering trees
on the recreational park area of the hospital.

The angels
enjoy an unrestricted view from on high,
over the valley of the Wien River,
to Schönbrunn's Palace and beyond.

  1. Those Art Nouveau angels are really gorgeous. Angels with bobbed hair--awesome! The whole presentation took my breath away. Thanks.

  7. What an exceptionally beautiful chirch and the location of it too. Love also all the detailed pictures but most of all the sun looking in through the lovely painted window.

  8. I just slowly breathed in that first capture. It is stunning.

I get sad when the blue skies are gone for a while, too.

  11. Whenever I see an image of angel my spirits are immediately uplifted, and anything that was troubling me vanishes like a wisp of mist.
